Pioneer Animal Hospital is fully accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association – a distinction held by less than 10% of veterinary hospitals across the United States.

    William J. Wood, Jr.

    Veterinarian (DVM)
    Dr. Wood is proud to call Leavenworth, KS his hometown!  He is a 1992 graduation of Leavenworth High School and attended Kansas State University for both his undergraduate and veterinary degrees.  Dr. Wood took over as sole owner of Pioneer Animal Hospital on January 3, 2006.  Prior to returning to Leavenworth he held positions as an associate veterinarian at both Michigan City Animal Hospital in Michigan City, IN (2001-2003) and Crysler Animal Hospital in Independence, MO (2003 to late 2005).

    Dr. Wood is married to Melony and has three children: Benjamin, Kimberly and Alexis. The family are proud owners of three cats: Oliver, Edgar, and Ramona. Dr. Wood and Melony have recently taken up road bicycling and enjoy all of the associated health and social benefits.  Dr. Wood’s other interests include music, the dramatic arts, and local (Leavenworth and Kansas City) sports.  You can commonly find him in the pit band (guitar/bass guitar) or on stage in community theater productions around the Kansas City area.

    Dr. Wood is a proud member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce.

    Reception 

    May is originally from Olympia, WA, but has been happy to call Leavenworth “home” since 2005. Her passion for animals and interest in science and medicine led her to working in the veterinary field. She joined our practice in 2015. May is an avid bookworm and is constantly looking for new subjects to study. May has four feline fur children (Rorschach, Muad'dib, Mikasa, and Melkor), making her the quintessential cat lady.

  • Kimberly

    Reception

    Kimberly is from Leavenworth, KS.   She worked in PAH’s kennel from 2013-2016 and then again for a short time in late 2017.  In 2018, she transitioned to the front desk where she enjoys getting to know our clients much better. When she is not at work, Kimberly can be found performing in theatres in the Greater Kansas City area. Kimberly’s best friend is a Russian Blue cat named Oliver who recently celebrated his 13th birthday!

  • Hunter

    Assistant

    Hunter is originally from Joplin, MO. In 2018 he moved to Leavenworth to live with and start a family with his fiancée, Allyssa.  He joined Pioneer’s team that very same year.  Hunter is the proud owner of one adorably fancy Pekingese, Lola. Hunter has worked as a veterinary assistant since 2015. When he isn’t spending time with his furry friends, Hunter enjoys fishing, bowling, and playing golf.

    Assistant

    Emily is from Tonganoxie, KS and joined our practice in May of 2019. Emily lives on a small farm with horses, chickens, cats, dogs, a pig, and a hedgehog! She particularly enjoys taking in the serenity of the outdoors while sitting on the porch with her miniature horse, Marty. In 2019, Emily officially became a certified dog trainer through Animal Behavior College.
