Pioneer Animal Hospital is fully accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association – a distinction held by less than 10% of veterinary hospitals across the United States.

    Veterinarian (DVM)

    Dr. Wood is proud to call Leavenworth, KS his hometown!  He is a 1992 graduation of Leavenworth High School and attended Kansas State University for both his undergraduate and veterinary degrees.  Dr. Wood took over as sole owner of Pioneer Animal Hospital on January 3, 2006.  Prior to returning to Leavenworth he held positions as an associate veterinarian at both Michigan City Animal Hospital in Michigan City, IN (2001-2003) and Crysler Animal Hospital in Independence, MO (2003 to late 2005).

    Dr. Wood is married to Melony and has three children: Benjamin, Kimberly and Alexis. The family are proud owners of three cats: Oliver, Edgar, and Ramona. Dr. Wood and Melony have recently taken up road bicycling and enjoy all of the associated health and social benefits.  Dr. Wood’s other interests include music, the dramatic arts, and local (Leavenworth and Kansas City) sports.  You can commonly find him in community theater productions around the Kansas City area in either the pit/orchestra (guitar/bass guitar) or on stage.

    Dr. Wood is a proud member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce.

    Client Relations Specialist

    May is originally from Olympia, WA; but she has been happy to call Leavenworth “home” since 2005. Her passion for animals and her interest in science and medicine led her to working in the veterinary field. She joined our practice in 2015. May is an avid bookworm and is constantly looking for new subjects to study. May has four feline fur children (Rorschach, Muad'dib, Mikasa, and Melkor), making her the quintessential cat lady.

  • Kimberly


    Kimberly is from Leavenworth, KS. She worked in Pioneer's kennel from 2013-2016 and then again for a short time in late 2017.  In 2018, she transitioned to the front desk where she enjoys getting to know our clients. When she is not at work, Kimberly can be found performing in theatres in the Greater Kansas City area. Kimberly’s best friends are a Russian Blue named Oliver, a long-haired tabby named Tiberius, and a Great Pyrenees named Appa.

  • Brittany


    Brittany moved to Leavenworth from Hammond, LA, in 2016. She joined our practice in October of 2019. Brittany has a radiant personality and loves a challenge. Her high energy and sunny disposition make Brittany the perfect match for our boisterous patients! In her spare time, Brittany enjoys spending quality time with her infant son; walking her dog, Stitch; and relaxing with her three cats: Tigger, Meow Meows, and Lupa.

  • Klinton


    Klinton grew up in Basehor, Kansas. Klinton met his wife in 2015 through Basehor Public Library's book club, which they still attend regularly. He and his wife, Sarah, moved to Weston, Missouri in 2020. Their chihuahua, Einstein (whom they often refer to as "Ein"), is deeply loved and adorably spoiled. Klinton's appreciation for tightly knit communities, as well as his natural curiosity and love of animals, led him to join the Pioneer team in 2021. In addition to reading, Klinton enjoys playing strategic games and listening to comedy podcasts.

  • Georgia


    Georgia was raised in Atchison, Kansas, in a house full of girls. Georgia is a triplet and has a total of four sisters! Although they all lead busy lives, "family time" is top priority. The most recent addition to the family, Georgia's dog Onyx, has brought immeasurable joy. Even as a child, Georgia knew she wanted to work with animals. She is currently enrolled in Colby Community College's Veterinary Nursing Program and is excited to graduate in the fall.
